Quick Facts About the City of Salem
Safe and Smart
The City of Salem is proud to have a great system of public schools. In fact, our schools are getting even better due to a focus on renovation and college preparation. We have five institutions for higher education where anyone, from a student fresh out of high school to a career-changer, can pursue undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, and workforce training.
The City of Salem is lucky to be at the crossroads of two major highways: Interstate 5 and State Route 22. Whether you’re visiting family in the City of Portland or heading to Mount Jefferson for a weekend of hiking, it’s easy to hop on the road and get out on your next adventure.
If you’re looking to fly, we’re just about 50 miles south of the Portland International Airport. The local Amtrak station can also take you to Portland, or you can hop on a southbound train toward Sacramento, CA.
With commute times lower than the national average, most people in Salem choose to commute by car. However, you can also choose to hop on one of our local buses, called Cherriots. If you’re lucky enough to live downtown, you’ll find you can easily walk anywhere you want to go.
Our small town ambiance combined with the offerings of a big city make the City of Salem an attractive choice for those looking for homes for sale in a safe, well-established neighborhood. Of our adult population, 68% is married, and our residents have a median age of 36 years old. Nine out of 10 residents have obtained a high school degree or a degree of higher value. Also, our unemployment rate is lower than the national average.
Adding to our family-friendly factor is the fact that our crime rate is lower than other similarly sized metro areas in the United States. Not only that, but our rates of violent crime are significantly lower than the national average.
We’ve seen the beginnings of exponential population growth in the past few years. In 2017, our growth rate reached 2.06% with no signs of falling. That same year, median home prices in the City of Salem rose by 12%, making this the second year in a row that we have far outpaced the national average. If you’re looking to buy, though, don’t be scared—we’re still more affordable than the national average.
